What is your favorite part of the Annual Golf Outing (September 9 at Prairie View Golf Club)?
The best part is the shotgun start. Seeing all of the players, supporters, friends and legislators lined up for a great day on the golf course. Everyone is together, ready and excited for a day of golfing and raising money for IBRG (Indiana Business for Responsive Government, the Chamber’s political action committee).
It is also a great opportunity for board members, Chamber members and legislators to come together to support IBRG.
How is your job different during election season?
We spend off-election years preparing, finding candidates and setting the stage for the May and November elections. In election season, we're all about helping to elect state legislative candidates in targeted races, including fundraising, polling, advertising and in-the-trenches field work.
There's nothing quite like an all-in effort with a candidate in a target campaign. I always miss the crises, pressures and all-encompassing nature of a campaign when it is over.
Why does the Chamber focus on grassroots advocacy?
Most state legislators really do care and respect the opinions of employers and active citizens in their districts. The Chamber's grassroots program is designed to provide information, encourage and assist our members and supporters to contact legislators about issues that really matter.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my family, particularly outdoors adventures and events like festivals. I also enjoy paddling my kayak, early mornings on the range and I brew my own beer.
My wife and neighbors call me a lawn extremist and I have tomatoes and squash in my garden currently.
What was your first car?
My first car was a 1976 brown Nova. It was a two-door with vinyl seats. It was a rusted-out jalopy, but it was mine. It was a good reliable car, even though it wasn’t my dream car.
One winter I slid off the road after a snowstorm in my Nova. I remember being picked up by a car full of girls instead of AAA.
