How do you serve customers, both internal (staff) and external (Chamber members)?
I provide general HR support for the Chamber. That includes keeping policies up to date and communicated, assisting with insurance renewals and general questions regarding attendance and benefits, and handling 401(k) responsibilities.


I also help to analyze results of our Best Places to Work in Indiana survey internally. We can’t compete since we’re a program partner, but it’s helpful to see where we stand compared to other participants and to focus on things we can improve upon during the next year. Another responsibility is guiding staff in tying their annual performance goals to the Chamber’s internal strategic plan.

As co-chair of our wellness committee, I schedule educational sessions covering topics such as financial literacy and harassment. I also organize flu shots and wellness screenings.

I’m here for anything our staff needs.

On the membership side of things, I coordinate requests for the HR Helpline and Business Research Center.

Describe how the HR Helpline and Business Research Center provide value to members.
The HR helpline offers free, confidential consulting on human resources issues. Most questions deal with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), hiring/firing and unemployment issues.

A large majority of HR people are manning their departments on their own. It’s nice for them to be able to pick up the phone and talk to another HR professional. And it’s fun for me to say, “I’ve actually dealt with the issue you’re calling about, and this is what worked or didn’t work.” I feel like I’m making a difference.

Regarding the Business Research Center, many small business owners don’t have the time or resources to get the information they need. We offer specialty publications, customized lists and other data. Our most popular requests deal with sales leads and salary and wage information.

HR laws are constantly changing. How do you remain up to date?
I’m a member of the national Society for Human Resource Management and the local chapter, which helps me stay on top of the latest developments.

In addition, employee training that the Chamber provides through conferences and events is phenomenal. To work here and have those opportunities at my fingertips is priceless. It’s a great way to not only stay current, but also interact face-to-face with members who previously have called the HR Helpline – or may in the future.

What are some of the ways you enjoy spending time with your two daughters?
I read a chapter of a book to them every night. We’ve gone through several series of books together. That’s one of my prized times.

I’ve also just gotten them into running with me. I’ve run three 5Ks with my oldest daughter, who is 12, and one 5K with my youngest daughter, who is seven.

Describe one of the best Christmas gifts you’ve received.
This goes way back to the year that my parents gave me a dollhouse. I had to have been in first or second grade. They built it themselves and it was huge. My sister and I were completely blown away.

Favorite possession: A rosary that belonged to my grandmother
Favorite book: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy or The Watsons Go to Birmingham (it’s a toss-up)
Favorite vacation spot: Cancun
Favorite food: Pizza (it’s my guilty pleasure)
