Could you give a description of your job, as well as how it has changed since you started working at the Chamber?
I sell sponsorships and advertising for the Chamber and the Wellness Council of Indiana, as well as for BizVoice® magazine and our web site. I also sell sponsorships for our major seminars and conferences and our two major events, the annual awards dinner and the Best Places to Work dinner.
The biggest change is that CEOs are looking for added shareholder value with investments they make. My job is to demonstrate the value of the sponsorship I’m selling so they see the potential return on their investment. The days of just calling up somebody and getting them to buy something on the first call are over.
There is a debate going on regarding print and online marketing, with some saying things are moving more online. What are your feelings?
The rumors that print is dead are greatly exaggerated. Print will continue to have a role. I see a role for both print and online. You have to have an online presence and offer online sponsorships, but print isn’t going away anytime soon. I think print has a visual appeal that online will never have. I encourage companies to do both forms of media.
You’ve been working at the Chamber for more than 30 years. What has kept you here for so long?
What kept me here was being surrounded by a great staff, as well as the Chamber’s continual growth for the past 30 years. I wanted to be a part of the dramatic transformation between the good organization the Chamber was in 1984 to the award-winning, nationally-recognized chamber of commerce it is today. The leadership is another reason I’ve stayed. We’ve had great presidents and great senior staff. Everyone here is dedicated to excellence.
What’s a major hobby of yours?
Photography. I’ve been taking pictures since I was 10 years old when I got a camera for Christmas. I enjoyed taking pictures of my family. After I got out of college, I was taking pictures of my nieces and nephews and then neighbors started asking if I could take their family pictures.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Do what’s right, always do your best and treat others the way you want to be treated.
