What Chamber entities do you handle in your job?
I’m in charge of accounts payable and receivable for the Wellness Council, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Chamber services (primarily BizVoice® magazine). I do things such as account reconciliations and journal entries. An example of what I do: With the Indiana Chamber of Commerce Foundation, when we receive a contribution or donation to the foundation, it has to be booked in our receivables system so we can show we received the money. If we are to pay a bill out of there, we have to record that as well to show the money going out of the books.
You’re relatively new to the Chamber. What made you choose to work here?
I have been here for seven months. This is a very different business than what I’m used to. I worked for a convenience store chain for 13 years before coming here, so it’s a totally different spectrum of accounting than I’m used to. It’s just something different that I thought would be interesting to get to know more about.
How has your experience been at the Chamber so far?
I really like it here. I like all the people here. The accounting concepts are all basically the same as in my previous job, but the things I deal with here on a regular basis are different than what I dealt with. For example, here I process payments for BizVoice ads, orders for posters, conferences and various other things that go on at the Chamber. It’s a different atmosphere than what I was used to.
If you could witness any event - past, present or future - what would it be?
I would have liked to have been born in the late ’60s or early ’70s to see and experience that whole era.
You have a daughter who recently started kindergarten. What have been the changes you’ve dealt with regarding that?
She’s not used to going to school all day. She’s still adjusting. Her thing that she looked forward to most was riding the school bus. She says it’s because she loves not having to buckle up. She’s making a lot of new friends already. She’s doing cheerleading for the youth football program in our county, and she’s making even more new friends with that.
